Spotlight: Brin De Folie

This week we wanted to feature an independent stylist who has built a long-lasting and successful business and can be an inspiration to any stylist who wants to take it to the next level!

“Brin de Folie,” which roughly translates to” A Touch of Dalliance,” is owned by Guylaine Aylwin. Guylaine has been a hairdresser for 32 years, where she worked in a handful of salons and built a strong customer base. In 2004 she decided to take a leap of faith and start her own business so she could offer her customers a more elevated and personal experience.

At an ABA show in Montreal, she was inspired by an industry speaker that told the story of a father who was responsible for taking his young son for haircuts. As this was a challenging undertaking, this father tried many different barbers and eventually asked his son which barber was his favorite. His son answered “the one with the yellow lollipops!” This simple story inspired Guylaine as often the simplest things can!

The first thing she asked herself was “what would I want when sitting in a stylist’s chair?” From this point, she began to create her dream environment: a peaceful zen space, filled with beautiful fragrances and peaceful sounds of birds and nature to deliver a calming and inspiring experience for her clients.

 

Guylaine works alone. She suffers from a hearing disorder called Meunière, which affects the inner ear and requires her to wear hearing aids. Working with an assistant can be an added stress, and she wants to focus only on her cherished clients.

When we asked her why she only retailed Moroccanoil products she simply said: ”I like to work with products that I believe in and can recommend with confidence, and the fragrance is addictive!”. When the independent loyalty program was introduced, she dove in full force and has not looked back!

Starting as a Bronze partner, Guylaine has grown to become a Platinum partner. This requires a salon to purchase an average of $2000 a month at salon cost- something that is typically achieved by multi-chair salons who are strong retailers. When we asked Guylaine how she did it, we were shocked! She simply said that she introduces our products with passion and teaches her clients how to get the best results with them.

Putting her client’s experience first and selling products she believes in herself has proven to be Guylaine’s recipe for success and the foundation for a thriving business!
